Gibraltar 9608 Round Top Drum Throne Review

The Gibraltar 9608 Round Top Throne is a very comfortable and well-built drum throne for the money and is the best drumming chair offered at a mid-level price point.

This particular throne from Gibraltar features a classic vinyl round-top design with several inches of high-quality padding to ensure comfort for longer periods of playing.

The memory foam padding inside the throne is very comfortable to sit atop. It’s not too firm, and not too soft. It really does feel great to sit on.

In terms of stability, this Gibraltar throne also excels. Gibraltar is renowned for its durable and well-built hardware, and this throne features three particularly large double-braced legs with oversized rubber feet for stability.

There is no wobbling or tipping, even for heavier users. It has a very impressive design, especially considering its more affordable price tag.

When it comes to height adjustment, the spindle mechanism is very easy to use and it also has a memory lock & locking collar that allows you to recall previous settings when setting up for each show.

It offers a wide height adjustment range between approximately 20-27 inches, and it’s perfectly adjustable for almost any size.

At this price point, there is no more sturdy and functional throne available. This model trumps the competitor offerings from Pearl, Tama, and DW.

The Gibraltar 9608 round-top is the best drum chair offered at the intermediate-level price point. It has all the desirable features a discerning drummer would want and it does not compromise on comfort, durability, or supportiveness.

This highly dependable throne will help to reduce fatigue in your feet and legs while playing and offer a supportive base for you to play drums with good posture.

Gibraltar 9908 Pro Motorcycle Drum Throne Review

The Gibraltar 9908 Pro Motorcycle Drum Throne is another solid throne from Gibraltar, and this is a premium-level option that sports a larger, oversized motorcycle seat that offers exceptional comfort and support.

This is a more expensive model than the previous Gibraltar throne and targets the high-end, professional-level market.

It is exceptionally supportive and sturdy, making it the perfect drum throne if you are looking for a roadworthy model that feels great to sit on and play for long periods of time.

Equipped with four heavy-duty double-braced legs, this ultra-sturdy throne provides a rock-solid foundation for any drummer. There is no movement or wobble, it stays perfectly still.

The seat top is a huge 17” oversized motorcycle-style throne, sporting a durable Cordura and vinyl seat with extra-soft foam padding.

The throne top itself feels remarkably soft and the cushion feels great. I really like its shape, as it allows my thighs to slope down easily toward the pedals without restricting my movement.

The height adjustment mechanism on this stool is a swivel spindle that adjusts from 20” to 28” in height.

The spindle height adjustment is the only real downside I can think of for the Gibraltar 9908 Pro Motorcycle Drum Throne.

Competitor offerings at this price point utilize a pneumatic ‘gas lift’ operation, like the Roc N Soc Nitro chair, or the DW Airlift series of high-end thrones. These are much easier to adjust and are what I’d expect at this price.

Despite this, the 9908 Pro drum throne is the most comfortable and heavy-duty throne in Gibraltar’s full lineup, and I would highly recommend this throne to anyone looking for an exceptionally comfortable and practical throne.

Overall, this model will provide years of comfort and fantastic support whilst playing the drums.

        Features:

        • 17″ Oversized motorcycle seat
        • Spindle height adjustment
        • Height: 20″-28″ Inches

        Pros

        • Large 17" motorcycle seat is supremely comfortable with multi layer foam padding
        • Very heavy-duty and roadworthy with four double-braced legs
        • Excellent support and stability particularly for larger drummers

        Cons

        • Doesn't utilize a pneumatic 'gas lift' height adjustment like other premium thrones
        • Not the most portable drum throne available due to its weight

DW 3000 Series Drum Throne Review

The DW 3000 series throne has been created with the working drummer in mind. It is an affordable throne that is dependable and comfortable for rehearsals, studio sessions, and live performances alike.

It is rather compact in design, yet it possesses a high level of quality and reliability you can expect from DW drums. The seat and base are sturdy and do not wobble at all.

This drum throne may not look like the most lavish drum seat ever, but it does perform great. It features a round-top seat that is made with DW’s multi-layer foam and offers excellent support.

The vinyl seat top feels smooth yet highly durable. It retains its shape excellently and it is resistant to breaking, tearing, or wearing out.

The height adjustment mechanism on this drum stool is straightforward, but not amazing. It features a sliding tube height adjustment with a memory lock so you can replicate your desired setting for each show or rehearsal.

This DW drum throne offers excellent value for money whilst being a great quality drum stool that is very easy to adjust and transport.

If you are looking for a quality throne that you can rely upon for every show then this is a fantastic offering from one of the best drum brands that you can trust.

          Features:

          • Lightweight and portable design makes it perfect for gigs
          • Comfortable and supportive to sit on
          • Great value for money

          Cons

          • Tube height adjustment isn't ideal, but it does include a memory lock

            Gibraltar 6608 Drum Throne Review

The Gibraltar 6608 drum throne is a firm but well-made drum seat. The vinyl material is comfortable and the stitching is strong. This is my pick as one of the top budget drum thrones on the market.

The height adjustment mechanism on this stool base is a sliding tube with a memory lock height adjustment and it is straightforward and simple to use.

The mechanism allows you to choose any height between 18” and 24” tall. It’s slightly on the shorter side, but it can still go tall enough for most drummers.

The stool base is strong and sturdy with supportive double-braced legs and large rubber feet to ensure there is zero movement or wobble whilst sitting atop this drum seat.

This Gibraltar throne is the most affordable option featured in this guide, and it certainly delivers a lot of bang for your buck.

The motorcycle-style seat is actually very comfortable and the design helps to reduce leg fatigue while playing. It has extra thick padding which is really impressive considering the price tag.

Overall this is definitely a good quality product, both sturdy and durable. It offers fantastic value for money, plus lots of support and durability.

            Features:

            • 15″ Motorcycle seat top
            • Tube height adjustment
            • Height: 18″-24″ Inches

            Pros

            • Excellent value for money
            • Supportive and durable
            • Roadworthy construction

            Cons

            • Not very compact or portable
            • Not the most comfortable throne

Pearl Round Top Drum Throne Review

The affordable Pearl Round Top Drum Throne is indeed an impressive throne for its price bracket.

The round-top seat is plush and made up of memory foam cushioning. This drum seat will be sure to provide you with plenty of comfort and support.

In use, I found this seat soft and comfortable to play the drums on, and I found the sliding height adjustment fairly easy to use. I found the drum stool base was sturdy and rigid.

It’s quite an affordable option, so it does sacrifice slightly in weight and durability. It is not as beefy or heavy-duty as the previous options, particularly the Gibraltar and Roc N Soc models.

However, the Pearl drum throne is still an excellent value product, and it’s surprisingly comfortable.

It may not be a top pick for a touring drummer, but for the entry or mid-level market, this is a reliable and supportive throne that is well worth the investment.

              Features:

              • 14″ round top throne
              • Tube height adjustment
              • Height: 18.5″-25.98″ Inches

              Pros

              • Lightweight and supportive drum throne
              • Compact and portable for travel
              • Memory lock allows you to replicate height settings

              Cons

              • It is not the most roadworthy or heavy-duty option, not best suited for professionals
              • The seat top would benefit from having thicker padding

              PDP PDDT710T Drum Throne

                PDP PDDT710T Drum Throne Review

The quality of this PDP Tractor Style Throne is rather impressive. The motorcycle-style top features a 3.5” padded seat cushion and it’s been ergonomically designed for comfort and support.

It’s not too deep which means it’s also a portable throne and it still has the road-ready build quality for working drummers!

My only main gripe with this affordable drum throne is the height adjustment mechanism, which uses a pin-locking assembly, which is quite limiting when it comes to setting your preferred height.

Despite this, it is an attractive drum throne at an affordable price. You definitely get a lot of bang for the buck with this drum stool.

If you are looking for a throne that is sturdy, comfortable, and portable for a budget price then this is a great option.

                Features:

                • Motorcycle seat
                • Sturdy tripod base
                • Height: 20″-26″ Inches

                Pros

                • Great value drum throne
                • Solid tripod base
                • Sturdy and portable

                Cons

                • Not as well designed as DW or Gretsch thrones
                • Lacks quality of premium thrones

                Drum Throne Buyer’s Guide

There are huge benefits to investing in a supportive and high-quality drum throne; sadly too many drummers underestimate the importance of owning one.

It is the only piece of drumming hardware that actively contributes to the maintenance of your physical well-being, and for that reason alone it should be considered a priority!

Many drummers underestimate the importance of owning a high-quality throne and simply play the drums on anything they can sit on.

The reason why buying the best drum throne you can afford is important is because it lays the foundation for maintaining a good drumming posture.

Maintaining a good drumming posture is essential for allowing you to play the drums to the very best of your ability.

Benefits of a High Quality Drum Throne

                Improved Comfort and Longevity

The best drum thrones are made with high-density foam cushions that are very comfortable, will hold their shape for years, and offer ultimate posture enhancement.

A drummer can be confident playing in any musical scenario knowing he’s sitting atop a plush, flat throne that distributes his weight evenly across the seat.

In terms of materials, a premium drum throne seat will be covered with a luxurious feeling soft velour cotton fabric or premium vinyl that is far more enjoyable to sit on than a cheap throne.

                Greater Stability and Confidence

Sitting atop a comfortable and supportive drum throne will enable you to play the drums with greater vitality and confidence.

The base of a good drum throne is much more stable and is able to hold the weight of a drummer more effectively than a cheaper alternative.

Feeling comfortable, supported, and balanced on a drum throne is crucial to playing at your very best.

                Reduced Risk of Injury

A quality throne will significantly reduce the risk of injury as a result of you playing the drums.

Cheap drum stools wobble around, forcing a drummer to be unbalanced and unstable around the pelvis area. Over an extended period of time, this will mean a drummer is exposed to a significant risk of back injury.

It is not uncommon for drummers to develop bad playing habits as a result of playing on a cheap drum throne. These wonky, wobbly, and unsupportive stools form bad habits and contribute to health risks such as hypertension and back pain.

So now you know it’s important to invest in a high-quality drum throne, it’s important to know what to look for.

Round Top Vs. Motorcycle Style Seat Tops

High-quality drum thrones come with a variety of seat styles. The most popular two types are round top and motorcycle seat variations. All of the products in this guide are one of these two options.

Neither is strictly better than the other, it’s simply down to personal taste to determine which one a drummer prefers.

                Round Top Thrones

The round-top throne is a little more basic than the motorcycle seat; it is the authentic drum throne. The round top supports the full weight of the drummer across the flat, cushioned seat. Many drummers swear by the round top throne, claiming there is more room for more flexible and natural body movement atop the round seat.

Round drum thrones are typically smaller than their motorcycle-style counterparts; with more weight being distributed across a smaller surface area. This encourages a tighter back drumming posture.

                Motorcycle Style Thrones

Motorcycle-style drum thrones have seen a wave in popularity over the last decade. The contoured seat top allows extra room for the legs to overhang without being impeded by the stool seat itself.

This helps to prevent leg fatigue and also offers greater comfort for drummers whilst playing for extended periods of time.

Materials Used In The Best Drum Thrones

Comfort and durability are paramount when it comes to the materials in drum thrones. Different manufacturers will use a variety of materials for the upholstery within the cushioned seat.

Cheap brands definitely skimp out on this part of the production, providing inferior drum stools. Trusted and well-known drum brands take pride in their craftsmanship and reputation with the mission of producing a comfortable and supportive throne.

As a benchmark, you will want to look for a quality drum throne that has been produced with high-density foam. The heavy-duty foam will retain its original mass and shape for years and will not warp, break, or become uneven over time.

A good drum throne seat may well be covered with a soft velour cotton fabric for a luxurious finish. Most other options will be encased in a vinyl trim around the whole surface. The stitching will be made of sufficient quality and impervious to tears and wearing down the fabric.

Different Types of Throne Height Adjustments

Drum thrones across the range will all feature different systems for allowing the drummer to raise and lower the height accordingly.

There are four different types of height adjustments for drum thrones. Each has its perks, and they are found on drum thrones across all the different price ranges.

                Bolt Locking Assembly

This is the cheapest height adjustment mechanism, almost exclusively found in insufficient, low-quality thrones, and should be avoided! Budget drum thrones will use this type of height adjustment and they are most likely to wobble and break. They are less sturdy and limit you to a very small selection of predestined height options.

                Sliding Tube & Memory Lock

This type of mechanical height adjustment is the first proper option for drum thrones. You are easily able to loosen a clutch that rests underneath the seat and you are able to slide up or down the metal tube to your desired height. The memory lock is included on the metal tube and allows you to replicate the desired height each time by saving your chosen setting. This mechanism is sufficient, but there are two more desirable options.

                Spindle Adjustment

The threaded spindle adjustment is a great mechanism for height adjustment in drum thrones. It is very simple to use, you can adjust the height with a single hand by spinning the seat top either clockwise or anticlockwise depending on if you would like to raise or lower the height. The spindle offers unlimited height adjustment and offers great stability.

                Gas Lift Adjustment

This is a highly advanced type of mechanism for drum thrones and is a very new offering to the drum throne market. It is featured in only the very best drum thrones and is the most desirable and expensive type of height adjustment. Pneumatic height adjustment for drum thrones is a fairly complex system utilizing compressed air for fast and effortless height adjustment with infinite height adjustment capabilities.

                Wrapping Up

A drum throne is a crucial piece of drum gear, that is responsible for posture and comfort while playing.

I hope this article has helped you find the best drum throne on the market for you. There are many different thrones available at different prices, and I hope this article has helped you to identify a good drum throne for your needs.

Owning a good throne that will offer you years of valuable playing and reliability for each and every show does warrant itself to being a great investment.
