Built-in digital mixer

Every ZLX G2 powered speaker comes with an onboard 4-channel digital mixer. The mixer features two combination XLR/TRS inputs and a dedicated hi-Z input to cover any application, from small groups to large ensembles running through an external mixer. After setting levels, you can add stunning DynaCord DSP and effects to the signal. You get a 7-band EQ, compression, ducking, reverb, chorus, and delay to shape your sound to perfection. Flexible enough for any application

ZLX-12P-G2, Nice PA speakers at a reasonable price; comes with an excellent app-controlled mixer and great Bluetooth

This review is from someone who owned the previous generation EV ZLX-12 BTs. I bought the G2's because one of my older ZLX-12 BTs was starting to fail. The G2 improves the best-selling PA speaker ever (> 1 million ZLXs sold), and the G2 is the same price.

The ZLX-12P-G2 has lower bass response, 54-18.5k Hz vs 65-18k Hz for the ZLX-12 BT (at -3 dB). I do notice slightly improved bass response, but let's be honest, no 12" PA speaker is going to provide heart pounding club-style bass, you simply need a subwoofer for that. The G2 has plenty of bass for my live band application and does fine for playing music during breaks.

A huge improvement on the G2 is a digital mixer, controlled either by the Quick Smart app or the new color back panel. The app is a strong point for the G2. You can download the app for free and put it in demo mode to see what features various EV speakers have. The app can control up to 6 speakers at once, adjusting volume and EQ for your entire system. New for the G2 is 3 channel EQ for each of the 3 channels plus a 7-band global EQ. There are also a bunch of effects. I tested a couple of the reverbs, and they seemed fine. Channels 1 and 2 have combo XLR/TRS inputs with profile presets for things like line, mic, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, etc… Channel 2 has an additional input jack for a Hi-Z guitar. I was able to use both an XLR mic and a guitar on channel 2 at the same time, however, as expected, you have a shared preset and EQ setting.

Let's talk about Bluetooth. My ZLX-12BTs had un-usable Bluetooth. At just 10' from the speaker, moving my phone would cause breaks in the sound. It was so bad for me, that I just used a cable. The G2 removes the 3.5mm input jack on channel 3, but it's OK. The G2's Bluetooth is FABULOUS; it's BT 5 vs. BT 4, and I can get 40+ feet away from the speaker with my Iphone 15 Pro and have a solid Bluetooth connection. Another nice Bluetooth feature is TWS, True Wireless Stereo, you can Bluetooth from your phone to one speaker, and then the first speaker will connect to the second speaker over Bluetooth i.e. stereo operation with no cables. TWS only works for Bluetooth Audio; a mixer needs to connect to both speakers with XLR or TRS cables.

The G2 is rated at 127 dB vs. 126 dB for the old one. SPL readings are taken with pink noise at 1m. I ran a simple, non-scientific experiment to measure real-world SPL numbers using music, without hitting the red limit on the display or the red limit light on the app. I played a bass heavy song, "Where the Boat Leaves From" by The Zac Brown Band; EV used this song to compare various EV speakers at NAMM a few years ago. I had the speaker on a tripod set to music with all EQ flat. I used Sound Level Meter, a free Iphone app and measured 106 dB at 1m and 101 dB at 15'. These numbers may seem low, but trust me, this is LOUD; I wore Ear Peace Ear Plugs during the test and would not want to run the test w/o hearing protection. I think a pair of G2 will handle my live sound needs for my 5 piece band playing for up to 200 guests.

The G2 has a new "kickback" feature that allows you to tip back the speaker while on the floor. This helps when you are busking or simply don't want to set up a stand for a smaller gig. Kickback worked well for me on a hard floor, but the speaker fell backwards when set on padded carpet.

I visited Sweetwater to compare the ZLX-12P-G2 to the ZLX-15P-G2, as well as the Evolve 30M and Evolve 50m. My thoughts:

• The ZLX-15P-G2 had better bass, but it is heavier and more expensive.
• Both G2's had a slight "nasally" tone that seems common with plastic vs. wood cabinets. This was only noticeable with a direct A/B comparison to either of the wood based Evolve systems.
• The bass on the Evolve 30M was a little better than the ZLX-12P-G2, however, the G2s go much louder.
• You can get a pair of ZLX-12P-G2s and a small Mackie mixer for about the same price as the Evolve 30M with it's built in mixer.
• I expected the bass on the Evolve 50M to be much better than the G2s or the Evolve 30m, and it was.
• It surprised me that the highs on the Evolve 50M were also much better than the Evolve 30M or the G2s. To be fair, the Evolve 50M is much more expensive.

In summary, I'm happy with my ZLX-12P-G2s and would recommend them.
