Concept Brooklyn Snare from Gretsch and Mike Johnston

Whether you catch him on the road or on MikesLessons.com, one thing is clear: instructor/clinician Mike Johnston knows what great snare tone is all about. So when Mike approached Gretsch Drums about developing a new concept snare, it was a meeting written in the stars. Mike and Gretsch's Brooklyn Standard Snare Drum blends the classic 6-ply maple/poplar Brooklyn wood shell formulation with some high-performance add-ons. Heavy-duty engraved Gretsch 302 Hoops (3.0mm double-flanged) sit on double 45-degree bearing edges for optimized head and shell interaction. On the batter side, an old-school internal damper helps take some of the edge off a cranked head or miked shell. On the snare side, stock 42-strand snare wires give the Brooklyn Standard a fat attack and incredible response. Paired with Gretsch tube lugs, the Brooklyn's standard Lightning throw off and butt plate, and a set of Gretsch-branded Remo USA heads, the Gretsch Brooklyn Standard Snare Drum from Sweetwater is a recipe for great presence and tone. A Silver Sealed interior and Mike Johnston signature label complete the package.

Gretsch Brooklyn Standard 14" Snare Drum Features:

  • A collaboration between Gretsch Drums and Mike Johnston (MikesLessons.com)
  • 6-ply maple/poplar shell exhibits bite, fullness, and sensitivity
  • Engraved 302 Hoops are full of classic Gretsch character
  • Double 45° bearing edges optimize head and shell response
  • Batter-size internal tone control tames overring
  • 42-strand snare wires promote a fat attack
  • Lightning throw off and butt plate
  • Iconic Silver Sealer shell interior
  • Gretsch tube lugs, Satin Black Metallic finish
  • Ships with Gretsch-branded Remo USA heads
  • Interior label signed by Mike Johnston

A Perfect Drum

I have a 40 Snare collection from 12 countries- various wood species, steel, brass, & copper shells, handcrafted staves. I play a different one every day and there are some incredible sounding drums in the mix. This Brooklyn is at the Top of the Class! Beautiful aesthetics, incredible build quality, & the sound! I tune my snares high, but this Drum's range of tuning is amazing. Virtually no overtone at any range. I am a retired Hobby Drummer & Collector but for a professional, gigging Drummer looking for a high-end, affordable, incredibly versatile Snare- this is the one.

Everything I wanted it to be

This snare is dope. It can be a rimshot machine and cranked and sound awesome or be super fat and dead and also sound awesome (the internal dampener helps with that). But truly, this snare is worth every penny.

Mike Johnston gretsch snare drum

Just got mine recently ,and this drum is very satisfying. It will make you want to play alot more.It just has that Mojo in it.At any tuning ,it exceeds all you could want and more.Best drum purchase I've made in a long time as far as A Brand New drum goes ,I usually buy alot of vintage - 1.Because I always have for 40 plus years now professionally and 2.I am a very picky shopper concerning NEW drums and gear - new drums and gear tends to not hold up as well as the tried and true older stuff.Just my opinion.Great snare drum for anyone who wants just 1 main snare that can do alot. Thanks Mike and Gretsch Drums.

Great sounding wood shall snare drum...

I am typically a metal snare drum guy, but this was a nice change. It had some warmth while having a great pop to it. The muffler is actually very nice when used tastefully. As a teenager I thought you crank the muffler as tight as it would go and it never sounded good. You can tame some overtones/sustain or totally dry this drum up with the turn of a knob.

Beautiful drum, smooth as silk finish and meticulously built. Work of art.
Music background: drummer since 1985 with lots of drums over the years

Superb Sound

I bought the Brooklyn Standard this past summer. I have always played steel or aluminum shell snare drums and this was my first introduction into the world of wooden shells. What I liked about this snare was the "thud" you get when you hit it. Metal shells have a bright snappy sound where the Brooklyn snare has a warm, round, deep solid thump. I wasn't sure whether I would like it as much as the metal shell but I have to say this snare drum sounds truly superb. Try it. I think you will like it. Oh yes, it has the old drum muffler we once used on our drum sets fifty years ago and the ability to mute the drum head a bit further enhances the deep sound of this snare. Gretsch hit a home run with this one. Thanks Mike Johnston.
