So if you're looking for value in a unique kit that looks, sounds, and plays great, you've found it: Gretsch Drums' Catalina Club 4-piece!

Gretsch Drums Catalina Club 4-piece Drum Kit at a Glance:
  • Mahogany shells give you excellent low-end punch
  • Shallow bass drum depth heightens expressiveness and puts you in firmer control
  • Be part of Gretsch's legacy in American music
Mahogany shells give you excellent low-end punch

The drums of Gretsch's Catalina Club 4-piece Drum Kit sport mahogany shells. So here's a handy Sweetwater refresher course on drum shell tonewoods: of the "big three" - mahogany, maple, and birch - mahogany is the softest. Softer woods produce more bottom end, while the harder ones (birch, for example) emphasize higher-pitched tones. If you like lots of satisfying, organic low-end punch in your drum sound, the Catalina Club 4-piece Drum Kit is for you. It's a versatile kit, as well - perfect across a broad range of music styles.

Shallow bass drum depth heightens expressiveness and puts you in firmer control

The Gretsch Drums Catalina Club 4-piece Drum Kit includes a 14" x 20" bass drum. If you're accustomed to playing kick drums with a depth of 16", 18", or even 20", you've been moving a lot of air - some would say needlessly. If you're going for a punchy, contemporary kick sound, you'll find the 14" x 20" size relatively effortless to work with - particularly if you've got padding and a mic in there. The final ingredient in this sonic alchemy is the kick's mahogany shell - which gives you robust bottom end. With less air to move, you can be more fleet-footed and expressive with your kick drum. And expressiveness is what music's all about, right?

Be part of Gretsch's legacy in American music

The Catalina Club 4-piece Drum Kit is a proud part of Gretsch's legacy in American music. Everyone knows Gretsch electric guitars and drums, but did you know that they got their start in 1883 as a banjo company? It wasn't long before Gretsch was making mandolins, ukuleles, and eventually flat-top guitars, contributing to the very roots of American music. So when you play a Gretsch instrument, you're playing more than a great axe, you're playing a piece of American music history.

Incredible Sounding Drum Kit at an Amazing Price. I love the warm tones of the Mahogany Shells.

Do not let the price of this kit fool you. These are solid Gretsch drums with an incredible sound. I've been a Ludwig drummer all of my life but haven't played in quite some time and it was time for me to start playing again, mostly for my own enjoyment (and my wife likes to watch and hear me play, so I have a built in "Groupie) lol). I was leaning towards towards Gretsch for many reasons but also because of the Mahogany Shells and the size options (14 inch Bass drum depth) as I really wanted a smaller kit. I did lots of research and found these Catalina Club kits were exactly what I was looking for. I've had them a little over two weeks now and after some time spent getting them tuned just right they sound amazing. I ordered the Gretsch G5 Hardware Kit with them and I'm very impressed. It's some of the best Drum Hardware I've ever used. Also I have to give a big thanks to Jared at Sweetwater, he helped me fine tune my order with some Evans Better Heads, Cymbals and other accessories. His advice was perfect for my needs and he was great to work with.
I've owned quite a few sets of drums over the years (1970's into 2012) and this is by far the best and most fun kit I've owned. So if you are looking for a nice compact drum set with great tone and solid Gretsch quality look no further!

I bought this configuration in Crimson a few years back for studio use. I have always liked smaller drums, and these did not disappoint! They are warm/sounding, and yet punchy at the same time. Ran NO muffling in the kick, and it was a cannon. The hardware and finish are very good considering how inexpensive these are. Need to get this kit back from studio and try it on some live gigs!

Awesome Kit

This Gretsch is my first good quality kit!

The finish is gorgeous and the sound is amazing!

The toms tuned up great straight out of the box!
They're also super easy to tune at any time (I wasn't used to this with
my old beginner kit).

They have a really nice warm and vintage tone. The sound is very pleasing to my ears.
Right now I have everything tuned kinda low, and it's getting me some of that nice late Ringo
tone.

It holds up on its own too.
I was playing at a medium sized venue with an electric guitar and bass and you could still
hear the kit clearly without it being mic'd.

Overall I highly recommend this kit!

Cool kit

I had decided to retire from playing but a year or so later had decided to pick it back up on a " hobby" level. All I needed to do was call Caleb Smith and soon I was playing this great mid-level Gretch kit! These are good sounding drums without breaking the bank. Thank you Caleb you have always assisted my choice making with expert and personable advice.

Catalina club is ok.

I owned this set recently and as for the positives, it sounds great with an exception. The toms tune easily, sound great and hold tuning. The snare on the other hand is a different story. It tunes easy and maybe it was just mine but the snares would not stay tight on the throw off or butt plate no matter how tight the screws were. I would keep tightening the strainer screws and all over and over, start to tighten the snare using the main screw on the throw off and about 5-10mins later, it would sound like loose garbage. They were not stripped at all either, the would tighten to a stop.

The bass drum mount wing nut screw would also not fully tighten the tom mount. Even with the wing nut at a full stop by hand, the bass drum mount would still wobble. More positive, the bass sounds great and holds tune easily as well. Tuned to 50hz (with tune bot) and has a nice deep, punchy tone. I put a pillow in it and a port hole for my mic and that sets it up perfect for me.

Now if you buy this kit, maybe replace the snares with a set that is either a string tie or a more textured strap, it may hold fine. The snare throw off leaves a lot to be desired, kind of rough feeling turning them on and off with a sort of dragging resistance to it. Floor Tom leg mounts are a strong design I would say, eye bolt and wing nut design. Biggest issue I have is when you loosen them, the eye loop is stuck to the leg and you have to tap them to get them to release. Is it a problem? No, just more of an annoyance tearing down.

Tom mount holds the tom good and steady, no moving or anything for that part. The extra cymbal arm holder on the other hand, I have no idea what size cymbal arm to use. I tore apart my tama roadpro boom stand, tried using the middle section and it was too big. Top section tube was too small. So I had nothing mounted in it. Heads are decent quality. I believe 1 ply Remo ambassador style heads if I remember right.

All in all, it could be a really good set, I just think it needs a few tunes and tweaks here and there and will be a great set.
