Renowned for Looks. Renowned for Tone.

Gretsch resurrects a classic in the Renown RN2 drum series. Back are the celebrated 7-ply maple shells with 30° bearing edges and Gretsch's hallmark Silver Sealer interiors, which look and sound every bit as glorious as they have for the last 15 years. What's new in the RN2 is its USA classic features — 302 hoops and a bass-mounted tom holder — along with some modern touches, including redesigned black round badges. New wrap and finish options make the Gretsch Renown RN2 kits more customizable than ever.

Brooklyn series in Satin Mahogany finish shown here

Gretsch 302 hoops capture a classic look and tone

The Renown RN2 series sees a return to Gretsch 302 hoops — the same ones found on today's Gretsch Brooklyn kits. At 3mm thick, the 302s are every bit as stout as the former die-cast hoops. Only they're less rigid for better flex, which offers more of that classic Gretsch goodness. Modern 302s are rounded over too, making them easier on sticks than legacy 302s.

Gretsch Drums: a slice of American music history

Gretsch has been making drums since 1883, and Sweetwater is proud to be part of that tradition. Alongside drums, the company's banjos, mandolins, ukuleles, and guitars have contributed to the very roots of American music. So when you play your Gretsch Renown drums, you're playing more than a drum kit — you're playing a slice of American music history.

The toms sing and the bass drum is a cannon!

I decided after decades away from playing to get back into drumming, and after noodling with a makeshift rototom set (with a 20"gong drum for a bass drum),then a Roland kit. Both sounded fine, but neither kit inspired me to play.

I finally broke down and decided it was time to buy a new shellpack, and that it'd either be tama star bubinga or Gretsch USA Custom.

Well, after listening closely to sound samples and realizing I wanted to keep within a certain budget well below my original choises, and after listening to several drummers playing RN2, Brooklyn, and Broadkaster kits, I settled on this RN2 set and added a 14 x 14 floor tom.

I just love the tone and sustain of these drums. They are SO MUSICAL! Each drum, when tuned properly (which is easy with this line), produced a clean, clear note, almost like plucking a piano string. And, while I normally would hve chosen a 22 x 16 or 20 x 16 bass drum, I ended up deciding on the 22 x 18, which is a cannon!

These are professional-quality drums,no doubt. All of the hardware is of high quality too. And they make me want to play them, which is exactly what I was looking for.

I got the piano black finish identical to my 1st, garage sale vintage Gretsch bebop drumset I bought back in 1977, which made it nastalgic for me.

This is one beautiful looking and sounding set of drums at a great price; nearly 1/2 the price of Gretsch's USA Custom top of the line. The only thing I would have preferred would've been a 8 x 12 / 9 x 13 rack tom combo rather than the 7 x 10 / 8 x 12 Gretsch decided to make standard. I guess I'll eventually add a 9 x 13 tom, but it would've been nice not to have to spend the extra money on top of the shellpack.

Otherwise, I couldn't be more pleased with choosing this Gretsch Renown series shellpack!

Professional Quality

After a ton of research because of the huge cost of pro quality drums; even at the entry level, and influenced by a superb snare I recently purchased through Sweetwater for my churches kit I finally chose the Gretsch Renown RN2's maple 5 piece shell pack in piano black lacquer and added a matching 14x14 floor tom direct from Gretsch.
My high expectations were exceeded; I have been completely satisfied with my choice and have zero buyer's regret. Every time I see them, let alone play them, I think, "I love my drums." They have a fine finish produced by four coats of lacquer; it gives them the classic look of an "instrument" instead of just a set of drums. The glossy piano black looks awesome with the high chrome of the hoops and hardware.
Speaking of the hardware; the 302 hoops and G5 hardware are heavy duty. Renown and Brooklyn shell hardware matches Gretsch's G5 line of heavy performance hardware, a huge plus. You could defend yourself with one of the floor tom legs; they're that heavy. This is a top quality, heavy duty shell pack from the Silver Sealer interiors to the finishing details outside. The RN2's are a professional quality shell pack and they have the weight, and the fit and finish to prove it.
You play these drums and your first thought is, "Ok, that's why maple is king." So versatile and tunable; shells capable of playing any style of music. A beautiful resonance and tonality; a kind of range you can only get from maple shells.
I'm so pleased with the drums and their quality that I still gave them 5 stars even though I've a bone to pick on an issue.
Gretsch choose not to utilize nylon washer protection for the metal on metal contact of the hoops and the tension rods. For drums of this quality, and expense, this is surprising and uncompetitive on Gretsch's part because from DW to Pearl and everyone else they all do it to separate their top end drums from the run of the mill. RN2s are worthy of that little detail and I'm sure more than one drummer has questioned their quality based on this obvious omission on Gretsch's part, of an industry standard. For less than $75 I refitted my Renowns with(upgraded)washer protection; the way they should have come in the first place.

In researched conclusion; for the very considerable money, the RN2s are the best entry pro shell pack offering on the current market .
