3-piece Cymbal Set from Paiste and Daru Jones

Daru Jones's showmanship and expressive phrasing have earned him spots performing alongside Jack White and Talib Kweli. From the same musical mind comes the Paiste PST X DJs 45 series. These FX cymbals proudly bear Daru's silhouette logo and expressive soul. What's cool is, their 12" size makes every cymbal in the line — hats, crash, and ride — perfect for gigging, mixing, and stacking. If you're looking to add new layers of expression to your playing, check out Paiste PST X DJs 45 cymbals from Sweetwater.

12" Hats

Daru Jones's 12" PST X DJs 45 Hats will channel your illest grooves this side of Dilla. Use them as FX hats for everyday playing or as your main hats for funk, soul, and hip-hop. Their crisp attack, quick decay, and biting wash are sure to add new dynamics to your playing. Sweetwater tip: try playing the black-finished bottom cymbal up top for tonal variety and enhanced visuals.

12" Ride

If you're leery of calling a 12" cymbal a "ride," you're not alone. But take a turn on Daru Jones's 12" PST X DJs 45 Ride, and you might think differently. This cymbal has that sampled-and-sped-up sound to bring your favorite breakbeats to the stage. A defined ping and chunky bell tones are yours at a controlled volume for intimate settings. Not only does the DJs 45 Ride sound fire, but it also looks the part, too — its vinyl 45 motif with black finish, record-groove lathing, and "Side A" stamp is bound to attract the right kind of attention when you play out.

12" Crash

Don't let the small size of Daru Jones's 12" PST X DJs 45 Crash fool you: multiple holes along the bow give this crash a deliciously dark and trashy tone and an explosive character — one that's perfect for busting old-school breakbeats and performing with electronics. Because the cymbal is so low mass, it's controlled enough for small gigs and chokes on a dime.

Solid sound, small footprint, perfect for a trashy cocktail.

I got these cymbals for my cocktail kit I made with a suitcase since the case itself is too small to pack anything larger than a 14" cymbal. The ride really does have a great sound and is super fun to bust some chops on with that bell, though I actually prefer the black hi hat bottom more as a ride. I'm not too fond of the crash being that it's more of an fx/splash cymbal than a crash, but it fits really well with my suitkit.

I would recommend switching the cymbals around to find a good sound that you want, and since they are all 12" it's no issue. I personally use the hi hat bottom as a ride and the crash as a hi hat bottom (the crash and hi hat top make for a sharp funk sound). If you want a really solid, full sounding hi hat, put the ride on top of the black hi hat bottom; the nearly all black look is nice and the thicker, more tonal cymbals make for a shockingly impressive, less chunky hi hat.

I currently have the crash as the bottom half of the hi hats, and the ride and bottom hat as crash rides. I threw a bell I cut from an old cymbal on the hat bottom since the bell doesn't quite ring the way I want.

I highly reccomend experimenting with the various configurations you can get with these cymbals to find what works best for you kit. They look great, they sound slick and chunky, and having the smaller profile makes them a seamless addition to any kit.

Cool, fun and sounds great!

I bought these for my TAMA cocktail kit. I love that each cymbal is only 12" versus my 22inch ride, 16 inch crash and 14" hi-hats. Too much for an impromptu gig. Yes I keep my kit in the trunk. You don';t need to ask me twice to play. Anyhow these check all the boxes. They sound great, look great and are easy to setup and pack up. Also loved the black with my Evans Hydraulic black heads! Orange drums, black heads and black cymbals with holes. This should be sold this way! Definite show stopper.

Here is a great video on how these sound and how versatile these can be. I found a great you tube video to hear them played in different ways. Type in (Paiste 12" PST X DJs Hi-hat Cymbals) I would include the link but its not allowed. Keep in mind that it's a different sound, but when you dial them in and play them fast and hard you can't help but smile.

Hope this was helpful, but IMHO if you can get your hands on these don't think twice.

Updated review: This set is better than I gave credit for.

I originally got this set for a suitcase drumset, and it did its job well. I've since upgraded everything from the cymbals to the suitcase itself, but the things that remain are the crash and top hihat.

That crash cymbal (basically an fx splash/crash) has been the most versatile cymbal I've ever owned, being used as a splash, crash, clap stack, sizzle china, it's so good for so many uses. The hihat top is nearly identical and currently lives under my meinl extra dry hats a la zackgrooves style, with the crash sitting atop an unlabeled splash hat from a children's drumset.

I still love the bottom hat in this set as a ride cymbal, but it does not crash well. The stick definition is insanely pronounced, and if it had a good sound when hitting the edge I'd probably use it as an auxiliary ride, but I'm still not sure of how I'd like to implement it. For now, it lives on the floor.

The ride from this set has become a wall clock in my drum room. I loved it at first, but grew away from it as it didn't mesh well with the dry meinls I started using. It looks awesome, and the bell is great, but it's otherwise not what I'm looking for.

All that being said, it is very worth getting if you want cymbals for a mini kit or you're looking for some circles to spice up your circle collection. That crash cymbal is something truly special, and all the other cymbals compliment it wonderfully.

Some good some not.

I got them and be playing now with them more than 20 times. The Ride is great and sound more that you think. Fit perfect my little Cocktail Set. The Splash i Super great. Love the action and Sound of it. The reason why i rank this Set so low is the High Hat. It has the Sound like you clap in your Hand. I can recommend..... if you need a small Ride go for it and buy it Single. The Crash is a must have. Dump the High Hat..... And i try all combinations. Not sure what they be up with....
