Son of ’47

Compared to tube-based microphones, solid-state microphones like the Warm Audio WA-47jr are prized for their detailed sound and resistance to distortion. These are the reasons transformerless FET mics with a U47-style capsule are so popular on kick drums and other percussion instruments, capturing their power and intensity with amazing fidelity. So naturally, the WA-47jr shines on percussion. That said, it’s also a go-to choice for acoustic instruments where capturing fast transients is critical, and it should be on your short list of mics to audition on vocalists, electric guitar cabs, and a whole lot more. Perhaps the more pertinent question is: what isn’t it great on?

Three polar patterns = impressive flexibility

The WA-47jr’s three polar patterns — cardioid, omni, and figure-8 — give you impressive flexibility when it comes to exploring different recording techniques. Cardioid, with its moderate side and near-total rear rejection, is useful for just about any studio task. Omni is great for capturing room ambience along with your source. Use a figure-8 technique to overdub a sax with natural slap or to record two singers on one mic (just be sure of the balance). And with two of these mics, you can implement stereo techniques such as spaced pair (A/B), XY (including Blumlein), ORTF array, and mid-side (M-S).

What can the WA-47jr do for you?

Every studio needs at least one pair of high-quality large-diaphragm condenser mics. You can use the WA-47jr on anything. It’s great on vocals, acoustic guitars, double bass, electric guitar and bass cabs, piano, drums and percussion, strings, brass, woodwinds, and any other source you’d care to throw at it. Considering its amazing price, it would be wise to at least double your value and get two for recording tracks in stereo!

Quality components make the Warm difference

How does Warm Audio do it? They order parts and build in quantity, which keeps costs down and delivers amazing value, but they do not cut corners on parts. The WA-47jr is built with premium all-discrete components, such as Toshiba FETs, Wima film capacitors, Panasonic electrolytic capacitors, and a custom reproduction of the capsule used in vintage ’47s.

A large part of any microphone’s sound is contributed by its capsule. The complexity of the k47 capsule used in the WA-47jr requires a painstaking manufacturing process; such high quality is typically not found in affordable condenser mics. For Warm Audio, premium parts and meticulous design deliver a superior-sounding microphone — one that doesn’t cost a fortune. Stellar performance, top-shelf parts, and amazing value: that’s the Warm Audio formula — and the WA-47jr nails it.

Great Value, Workhorse Mic

Every producer needs at least one large condenser, multi-pattern microphone as a go-to workhorse. The WA-47 Jr. is a great value mic in that category either as your first large condenser for vocals, a room mic for ambience, an inexpensive pair for overheads or any number of other applications. I use mine in a home studio set-up mostly as my main vocal mic, but I've also used it for tracking crystal clear acoustic guitar, micing an amp paired with a small condenser, as well as a background vocal mic using its figure of 8 pattern.

I brought the WA-47 Jr. to a friend's pro studio where we set up a shoot out with a Peluso, Townsend Sphere, and SM7B dynamic. The first two in that list cost multiple times as much as the WA47 Jr, yet my mic held up quite well, earning praise from my friend with decades of studio engineering experience.

Recently, I rented a Warm WA-73EQ; putting the 47Jr through it has really opened up the sound and given me even more definition in my tracking. It's a credit to this mic that it has grown with my set up and still holds a central focus in my productions.

The mic is three years old, and it still has a lustrous finish. It's always a joy to step up to. Highly recommended!

Swiss Army Condenser, this price is insane

Especially with upgraded preamps (clarett+ and the wa73eq) this thing kicks far beyond its league. it's permanently room mic or kick mic for my kit and never misses. occasionally i skip the neumann and go for this little fella. would recommend to anyone.

As valuable as it's big brother.

I own the WA-47 as well. I decided to purchase the Jr, mostly out of curiosity, and boy was I blown away by the versatility of this microphone. I have found that this mic performs EXCEPTIONALLY well on acoustic guitar. It's also great on male vocals (haven't experimented too much with female vox yet), but it's worth it for the sole application of Ac Gtr.

Warm Audio continues to change the game for the modern-day producer/engineer :)

Best microphone at this price point

This mic is fantastic. It is perfect for voice over as well as vocals, if you need a room mic, it's great for acoustic guitar and electric guitar cabinets. It's just exactly what you need if you don't have a high quality mic yet. I've been so used to my AT2035 that I never reached for more, and lemme tell ya this is 10 times better than those entry level microphones. I'd say it's certainly better than most if not all mics at this price point.

And paired with a good quality preamp, it's perfect for whatever you need.

What Do Our In-house Gear Experts Think?

Elliot Levy

I’ve been a studio engineer and producer in Nashville, and when I needed a reliable and great sounding microphone, I reached for the Warm Audio 47Jr. Its FET circuitry allowed acoustic guitars to sing and I could feel the low-end punch from a kick drum every time. I used it on nearly every session, and it is my go-to for my Kick Out mic.
