DW DWCPMDD2 Machined Direct-drive Double Kick Pedal at a Glance:
  • What do you want from a kick pedal?
  • Direct drive for quick, responsive feel
  • DW quality provides the sound and performance serious drummers demand
What do you want from a kick pedal?

In the design of the DWCPMDD2, DW reconsidered the role of the bass drum pedal in the kit. What do you want from your pedal? Fluidity, first of all - you want it to be an extension of your body, your mind - or preferably, your subconscious! As a driver of the music, it needs to be ultra-responsive, and the direct-drive DWCPMDD2 certainly is that. Whether you're feathering kicks in your fusion combo or driving a djent juggernaut, the DWCPMDD2 can ace the gig. We realize that kick pedals are highly personal, but the DWCPMDD2 is so outstanding, it deserves your serious consideration.

Direct drive for quick, responsive feel

Direct-drive pedals have a solid linkage between the footboard and beater assembly, which obviates the need for a traditional cam. This eliminates the slight lag time that can occur with a chain- or strap-drive model, giving you a quick, responsive feel that's ideal for any musical style, and particularly appreciated by fleet-footed metal drummers. The smooth surface of the DWCPMDD2's perforated solid-aluminum, split footboard is perfect if you're a drummer who rocks a kick drum technique like Dave Weckl's, sliding your foot forward to play double and triple strokes.

DW quality provides the sound and performance serious drummers demand

For over 30 years, DW has made some of the most revered drums, pedals, stands, and other drum hardware out there. It all began with an innovative adjustable trap-case seat. Not only was this the first of DW's many breakthrough hardware designs, but it showed the world that they really understand what drumming is all about. On top of that, DW craftsmanship has more than set the bar for drum makers everywhere. Discover this commitment to quality for yourself in every drum and piece of DW hardware you buy.

Better than tricks!! Worth the extra $

Several months back I upgraded from dw 5000's double pedals to trick pro 1v double pedals. They were an upgrade, very nice pedals but it was no match against these dw mdd's. I'm going to be comparing them in this review since I'm sure they're a common second choice against these and people wanna know if it's worth the $

I've only had these dw mdd's for two weeks but I already love them (played for a total of 2.5 hours.) Everything I didn't like about the tricks is fixed by switching to these.

Every setting is adjusted independently and includes marking lines so you can match and adjust everything perfectly.

The tricks had very easy setting adjustment compared to your average ~$400 chain drive pedals, however there were a few issues. For one, getting the beaters to match at the exact same angle was a pain (if you wanted to adjust them) because you had to hold the beater perfectly in place while screwing the nut back down, it would often fall back or forward ever so slightly while you were tightening it down, making it very frustrating and difficult to match them equally.

With these mdd's, when you unscrew the nut to adjust the beater angle, it still holds in place pretty firmly without even being touched, despite being loosened, so you give it some force to get it perfectly where you want, and then you can tighten it back down without worrying about it moving out of place.

Another issue with the tricks was that when i turn the tension knob, the beaters would move! This was extremely annoying. I don't know if this is an actual feature, or if i got a lemon, but basically I would have to set the tension first and then fix the beater angle from it being moved out of place.

Also an issue with the tricks was that the tension knob gives you no way of marking/ knowing where your tension setting is at. So you either have to turn them completely equal all the time, eyeball the threads, or tighten them all the way so you can loosen them back out equally.

The adjustment seemed to get messed up on my tricks after months of playing with it, the right knob started moving the beater angle/tension more than the left and it was becoming difficult to get the pedals feeling like they were at equal with eachother. This was after about 6 months of regular use, I read somewhere they need to be serviced about that often.

Anyways, neither of these issues pertain to the mdd's. Tension adjusts on its own just fine and is as easy as screwing it up and down with the key. It's so awesome. It doesn't change the beater angle like the tricks.

Ok so settings are perfect, how do they feel? They feel so good. They immediately made me faster, and able to play for longer without getting tired because they are so incredibly light and responsive. It takes a lot less effort to play fast. I also forgot how much better it feels to have a classic tension spring vs a compression spring. The tension stays true throughout your entire stroke vs getting more tight as you get close to the kick pad.

I set the direct drive/ throw all the way up, so it has the lightest pull, then I have tension right at medium with the beaters slightly closer than the middle setting. It's amazing, i spent hours messing with the tricks trying to find the setting that would work best for me, and I found the right setting on the mdd's within 10 minutes.

I'm not a professional drummer (yet), but I'm somebody who'll be playing for life and therefore wants some of the best equiptment to play with because it's more fun and enjoyable. If you're like me and you just want the best pedals that are the most fun/easy to play on you'll love these. If you have the cash, go for it. It was worth it all the way.

Dw machine drive a winner !!!

I have played many types of reg pedals, double pedals and longboard direct drive doubles. I just replaced my big foot trick with this dw machine drive and am super glad I did. It's lighter and is so simple but the weighted mallets are genius and the adjustability is super easy. Way to go dw !

Precision, precision, precision

I bought this sight-unseen and in fact had never played a direct drive pedal at all before. Coming from an Iron Cobra double bass setup I was relying on reviews and technical description....

I play mostly prog rock/metal but also rock, jazz and funk, and this pedal does it all. It took me a couple days to get accustomed to its feel but after that it feels completely natural. Incredible responsiveness balanced by complete control of power - it allows both soft jazz heel down playing and blazing fast double bass rolls. What I also love is how smooth the pedals are vs my ICs... not just the playing but also the actual pedal boards themselves. I can play in socks and even barefoot and swivel and slide techniques aren't slowed down.

Very happy with the pedal and the cherry on top is incredible build quality.

Amazing Pedals

I have been eyeing these pedals since they were introduced at the NAMM show a few years back. I finally decided to make the commitment to buy them. My 25 year old 5002A were staring to show their age (they perform very well, but they're my rehearsal pedals now.)

These pedals are very transparent. They have some surprising mass to them, but you do not feel it while playing.

I highly recommend these. They're not just for speed players. I can still get some feel out of them.

DW MDD

I"ve owned the DW machine direct drive double pedal for almost ten months now and wanted to wait till I felt more comfortable with the product before giving a review on it. In short, yes, it"s completely worth the price tag and is the smoothest reactive pedal I"ve personally played. I spent weeks researching the different offerings from various companies and wanted to make an investment on something that was going to last but, also offer top notch performance. At the time, there wasn"t a lot to go on this pedal when I purchased it. A couple of Youtube videos and a few forum threads with people bashing others for asking questions about these pedals was all I had to go on. My local music shops didn"t carry the DW MDD pedal and only had DW 9000 pedals to compare against. With the DW 9000 double pedals being a decent amount cheaper than the DW MDD pedal I went back and forth on whether it was something worth the extra money.
Anyway, are these pedals overly engineered? Maybe, but that's what you get with DW products...the best products on the market! You can pretty much dial in any type of settings you want, and it feels effortless while playing. Naysayers will warn you against switching to direct drive pedals but, ignore them because these are the most natural feeling pedals and you"ll adjust to them within seconds.

What Do Our In-house Gear Experts Think?

Curt Meyerowich

I've used the same chain-drive double bass pedal for the past decade, so I was a little intimidated when I decided to try out a direct-drive model. This DW MDD Machined Direct Drive Double Pedal made the transition comfortable, because I could easily adjust the action to get the feel I wanted. In fact, it's the only pedal I know of with a drum key spring adjustment, which is super convenient. I also love how responsive the MDD is. Compared to steel, the aluminum footboard feels like a feather under my foot, so my feet don't fatigue no matter how fast I play. And with no beaker slack from the second pedal, my timing has never been better.
