DW-inspired Shells and Hardware at an Irresistible Price

The PDP Concept Maple shell pack has all the makings of a high-performance kit at a down-to-earth price. That's because every component of this shell pack, from the all-maple F.A.S.T. shells right down to the graduated hoops and True-Pitch tension rods, has been influenced by DW's American-made masterpieces. Shell packs are available in several configurations and many finish options to please any player. Remo heads and DW-inspired Dual Turret lugs and PDP round badges crown each shell.

The Concept Maple series means unbeatable value

From the beginner to the gigging professional, drummers of all stripes are discovering the sound and performance they've been searching for in PDP Concept Maple shell packs from Sweetwater.

All-maple shells

PDP's Asian maple shells — considerably softer than DW's standard North American hard rock maple shells — deliver a full, meaty tone in the Concept Maple shell pack. Toms are round and powerful, and the kick drum packs an enveloping low end that can be tailored with head choice to suit a wide range of stylistic needs.

DW-inspired looks and performance

From the satin finish to the Dual Turret lugs, DW's influence on the Concept Maple series is unmistakable. Here's what you get:

  • True-Pitch tension rods with fine threads maximize tuning accuracy
  • STM tom mounts and isolation floor tom legs maximize resonance
  • Magnetic MAG throw off holds snare wires securely until it's released
  • Graduated counterhoops unlock the right balance of attack and sustain from each shell
  • Low-mass claw hooks look great and keep weight off your kick

Ready to rock with Remo heads

With a full set of DW-designed Remo heads, your PDP Concept Maple shell pack is ready to rock straight out of the gate.

You found the one. Buy it!

I honestly don't think you can beat this deal. Easily looks and plays like a kit worth much more than its price tag. And the finish looks 10x better in person than the pictures show. Hardware feels reliable and looks good too.

It was packed and shipped wonderfully. Everything was snug and well protected in the box. And even so, I had it all out of the box, tuned, and set up in two hours tops.

If you're searching for a mid-level kit worth spending the money on, you found it.

Sweet kit. The maple shells sound beautiful.

GREAT kit

I have a Yamaha birch stage custom that I LOVE. Of course, I changed the stock heads and played them for 3 plus years before buying this pdp kit. Now, I have had, Ludwig, Mapex, Tama, and now the pdp concept maple kit. The pdp kit is by FAR my favorite kit right out the box. This kit sounds amazing right out the box. I don't play professional anymore nor do I gig much. Just some of us older guys that enjoy jamming together. My shop is half set up for jamming/studio. I have played DW, (a friend's kit, not mine, never could afford DW) but I can say the pdp sounds just as good as the DW. Matter of fact, I'd go as far to say that same heads, same tuning, same mics and same drummer playing both, that the sound difference couldn't be picked up by just anyone. Not sure many drummers could tell the difference. I LOVE mine, period.

What are you doing?

I'm going to try and make this not sound like I was paid for my review (was not of course). I've been with PDP since the M5 series and even back then, the quality was still crazy good for their (almost) cheapest set at the time. The shell construction is great on their old to new lines (yes you can see the seams even on new shells, but oh well). The lacquer finishes are really well done (even cheap sets look great).

I went from M5 to X7 kits (mostly for different colors) and now onto concept series and in all those years, not one time did I ever have a hardware or shell issue. The heads leave a little to be desired, I believe they are a cheaper Remo ambassador style head, which they have been for years as far as I know. Still, very playable, just wear out a little quicker if you're a harder hitter. I upgrade my kits to the DW coated/clear and with the maple kits, give just enough dampening because those shells sing with an all clear, thin head. I prefer a slight muffle to mine. The birch kits would probably benefit from a clear ambassador style head or even a coated head for more studio sound.

I've used their hardware for years as well. From the early PDP800/900 series heavy duty stuff to the concept series stands and drum racks and have yet to have an issue. If you're spending money for higher end hardware because it's higher end or whatnot, try the concept series sometime, if you can damage that gear while using it normally, you're doing something severely wrong. That gear is built like a tank and stable as can be. I've mounted 2 toms (8/10")and an 18" cymbal off of one boom stand and it stood no problem.

For my money, it's well worth going with the concept series drums and hardware and I'd stand by that any day. I've used tama starclassic and DW performance series drums and their highest end hardware and to be honest, strength wise, I really don't know if they are any better (maybe a few more features you can now get with the concept series).

Bottom line: concept series and for the matter, all the PDP drums I've dealt with have been nothing but solid. Well worth the money and years of use!

Amazing sound and value

I was impressed with unboxing this kit to find that all of the drums were already assembled and actually kinda tuned - I could have played a small gig right out of the box if I really needed to. I'm a studio, so luckily...not something I'd ever have to do - but just thought someone out there may need to know that. Once setup, I tuned the kit up briefly with the stock heads and it sounded pretty good. I always replace stock heads with my preferred Evans stuff, but just wanted to see how it could sound stock. I added my usual G2 coated/G14 clear (top/bottom) to the toms, HD Dry to the snare, and G2/EMAD to the kick...and this really began to show off and focus the kit's maple shells quite a bit. I could have recorded a session straight away with just this. But, once I added just a tad of dampening here and there...this kit became one hell of a great studio drum kit - one that would rival drum kits costing 5 to 6 times as much. I ended up getting mine on a crazy black-friday kind of deal...and I seriously almost feel guilty for having such an amazing sound for such a low price. Unless you're just a "brand" kinda person, really love the "furniture" aspect of some shells, or are out chasing a nostalgic thing...there really is just no reason to spend more on a kit these days.
