How I Tested and Selected the Best Soundproof Curtains

While thick curtains will never properly soundproof a room, I’ve gotten great volume reduction results with the ones that I’ve used over the years.

To get a better overall view of the options for this list, I used my own experience combined with the experience of drummers and musicians that I know who also use these types of curtains in their music spaces.

When testing these curtains, I’ll check the materials to see how thick they are and how much dampening they provide. I’ll also look at the cost and overall aesthetic value, giving me a good idea of who each set of curtains will be good for.

NICETOWN 3 Pass Microfiber Noise Reducing Curtains Review

These NICETOWN 3 Pass Microfiber Noise Reducing Curtains are a good all-round option for those seeking sound blocking curtains with additional features.

Aside from their ability to reduce outside noise, they are also designed to black out windows, with between 85 and 99 percent effectiveness, while they also help to insulate the room too.

I love the versatility that these curtains offer, as being able to reduce sound, insulate a room, and blackout windows gives them major value.

I’ve found that the triple weave blackout fabric does work to block out outdoor sounds like traffic very effectively and this can make the curtains ideal for those wishing to record or play music in their bedroom or spare room.

Each soundproof curtain is available in a variety of sizes and colors, so should fit the vast majority of windows.

    Pros

      RYB Soundproof Blackout Curtains Review

Another solid all-round option comes in the form of these RYB Soundproof Blackout Curtains

They are made from 100 percent polyester, which is one of the best materials for soundproofing purposes and they also come with an optional, removable middle layer. When used, this layer can help to increase the soundproofing potential.

The ability to remove the middle layer allows you to experiment with different levels of insulation, taking into account any need to block out light, cold and heat too.

I love this middle layer feature, as it isn’t something that I’ve found in too many other curtain options.

The curtains performed especially well when blocking out car horns, background noises, and outdoor wildlife, but construction noises and louder sounds were able to get through.

      Pros

      • One of the thickest options on this list, thanks to the removable middle layer
      • These curtains also do a great job of blocking out light and different temperatures
      • They look great

Made from 100 percent polyester, these WONTEX 100% Thermal Blackout Curtains are heavy and, as a result, effective for blocking out annoying outdoor sounds, such as passing traffic, wildlife and people walking past your house.

As a result, they can be ideal for creating a soundproof environment for recording or playing music.

In addition to functioning as sound absorbing curtains, they are also able to block out light and reduce energy usage by keeping your home warm in the winter months.

I have a friend who owns these, and while he initially used them for sound reduction, he mostly loves how they keep the room warm.

They are also easier to care for than most options on this list, as they are machine washable using either hot or cold water and a mild detergent. That’s definitely a big feature that would convince me to buy one set of curtains over another.

It is estimated that these NICETOWN two-layer sound deadening curtains are able to block out twice as much sound as single-layer curtains.

These sound deadening curtains are ideal for drowning out annoying outdoor sounds that may be picked up by a microphone, or which may otherwise disturb you when recording or playing music in an indoor setting.

These curtains are also able to offer 100 percent blockage of light and UV rays, making them ideal for use in any room where you want to keep light-free. The curtains come in a variety of colors and are easily washable.

These are some of the best curtains I know of for creating an environment where you can completely control the lighting. I’d mostly recommend them for drummers wanting to make videos where a lighting rig gets used.

While these curtains aren’t as convincing as the other options I’ve listed, I do love all the colorful options available.

Buyer’s Guide: All About Soundproof Curtains

Soundproof curtains, also known as sound blocking curtains, or sound deadening curtains, are designed to help eliminate outside sounds.

As far as the various soundproofing options available to people are concerned, they are an affordable option and relatively easy to use, because all you really need to do is hang them over your window.

However, many buyers remain skeptical about their effectiveness and unsure of whether they are suitable for their specific needs. In this buyer’s guide, we offer some valuable information to assist you with this.

            Are Soundproof Curtains Effective?

The first thing you are going to want to know is whether or not soundproof curtains are effective. In truth, the answer to this largely depends on your needs and expectations.

Soundproof curtains are certainly effective for reducing noise and they can be extremely useful for musicians who play and/or record at home.

With that being said, despite the name, they are not completely soundproof and they will not block out all noise. For this reason, they are sometimes referred to as sound-dampening curtains or sound deadening curtains and these names are probably more accurate when it comes to describing the benefits they offer.

            Who Should Buy Them?

Sound blocking curtains are a sensible purchase for almost anyone with an interest in practicing a musical instrument or recording music at home.

However, they can be an especially astute buy if you live in a busy residential area, with lots of passing traffic, as they will be able to block out much of the noise, providing you with a better environment to work in.

Similarly, soundproof curtains can be a good purchase for those who may be experiencing temporary noise, such as in cases where short-term construction work is being carried out nearby.

With that being said, soundproof curtains should be thought of more as sound absorbing curtains or sound dampening curtains. They are not suitable for people who are looking to fully soundproof their room and if you are looking to work to the very highest professional standards, they are unlikely to be sufficient on their own.

            Other Benefits of Soundproof Curtains

While the primary purpose of these curtains is to reduce noise from outside, there are a number of additional benefits that are worth bearing in mind. The curtains can sometimes help to improve the acoustics within a room, reducing reverberation and for this reason, they are sometimes sold as acoustic curtains.

Generally, these curtains are able to help protect your privacy and, beyond this, some sound absorbing curtains are also sold as blackout curtains, helping to drastically reduce the level of light that is able to get into a room.

            What to Look For?

When it comes to deciding on which curtains to actually buy, it is important that you know the types of things to look out for.

You need to consider the size of the curtains compared to the window you are planning to use them on, and you will need to consider whether you want them to cover the window alone, or extend further.

Some soundproof or acoustic curtains advertise additional features too and these are worth keeping in mind if you have needs beyond simply keeping sound out. There are also practical considerations, such as how easy the curtains are to wash and whether or not you find them aesthetically pleasing.

You want to avoid anything that looks like it has a relatively open weave and it is always a good idea to read additional reviews from people whoand had either positive or negative experiences.

            Suitable Alternatives For Soundproof Curtains

While sound blocking curtains are useful for many situations, there are alternatives that may also be worth looking into.

You can potentially enhance the soundproofing in your room through the use of acoustic panels. These may be used in conjunction with acoustic curtains, or on their own and will take your soundproofing to the next level. Another potential option is to combine soundproof curtains with soundproof windows for a double effect.

If you need to take soundproofing further still for professional-level recording, you are probably going to want to construct a room within a room, complete with a floating ceiling. Alternatively, there are also acoustic drum shields that function as portable isolation booths for recording.

This is really the only way you are going to be able to eliminate background noise entirely, but most people will not need to go this far.
