How I Tested and Selected the Best Drum Stick Bags

The first thing I did when testing each stick bag was place as many pairs of drumsticks as I could. They gave me an idea of the storage capacity, and it allowed me to separate all my top options into different categories.

I then inspected the material to see how durable the bag was. Some materials last much longer than others, so I also compared the price of the bag to the material that it was made from.

After that, I looked at internal and external pouches and pockets that allowed me to place extra accessories inside. I placed a few things inside these pouches to see how well they worked.

This included drum keys and a few tension rods, and I checked to see if larger things like metronomes or practice pads would fit.

I was left with eight drumstick bags that I loved and think would work well for a variety of purposes.

                  Drum Stick Bags Buyer’s Guide

It’s easy to become hyper-focused on the equipment that we use to actually make a sound – but it’s also wise for drummers to consider all of the additional items that can make their lives significantly easier. Drumstick bags fall into that category!

The reason that a drum stick bag is a wide investment is quite obvious – it provides you with a compact cause to keep all of your sticks in one place. This saves you the hassle of having to locate them every time you perform, rehearse, or record.

Furthermore, it can be very frustrating searching for the right size and style of drumstick if you use several different varieties, which is common practice amongst drummers who frequently switch up their playing styles.

A stick bag allows you to group together the sticks that match and order them in a way that makes sense to you.

If you often break sticks while playing, having a lot of spares on hand is essential. This is another reason to invest in a stick bag – it will allow you to quickly access a replacement and get back to playing in no time.

                  Materials and Build Quality

One important area to focus on when searching for the right drumstick bag is durability. This is a byproduct of the level of build quality that the manufacturer achieves, combined with the materials that they use.

The three most common materials used to produce drumstick bags are nylon, canvas, and, in rarer cases, leather. Nylon is the most cost-effective option for manufacturers, but it lacks water resistance unless it is layered with another material.

Canvas is a popular choice for drumstick bags that need to combine a lightweight design with durability, and finally, leather is more of a niche choice but does offer a stylish, vintage look that some may find appealing.

The quality of the zippers also makes a difference. Ideally, you want your stick bag to last for many years before it needs replacing, and the zippers are the most likely part to break so I’d recommend looking for heavy-duty options.

                  Storage Whilst Performing

There’s nothing worse than dropping a stick without having easy access to a replacement live on stage!

The best drumstick bags like the Mono M80 stick bag and Vic Firth drumstick bag all feature retractable clips or loops that allow you to attach the stick bag securely to your floor tom while you play the drums.

This allows you to have your drumsticks easily within reach whilst you play live or in the studio, and it means you can quickly reach for another drumstick in case you accidentally drop one during a performance.

This is a crucial feature to look for when buying a new drumstick bag. All of the stick bags featured in this guide all feature retractable hoops and loops that enable you to attach the bag to your floor tom.

                  Organization and Capacity

Another thing to look out for when searching for the best-suited drumstick case for your needs is how many sticks, and other pieces of equipment it can hold.

It’s common for drummers to bulk buy sticks to save them from running out due to breaking too many or misplacing them. Other drummers rarely break or lose their sticks and, therefore, probably don’t need a bag with as great a capacity.

I’d recommend figuring out how many sticks you intend to keep in the case, then looking for one that provides more than that amount. Make sure you also consider any additional gear, like drum keys, brushes, mallets, or sheet music, that you’d also like to be able to fit inside the bag.

Drumstick bags with a larger capacity are also likely to be heavier and larger, which could make them less portable. It’s, therefore important to check that the bag has a durable handle so that you can easily carry it around when needed.
